Reading List.

The integration of mind body techniques into manual therapy.

As manual therapists we continually recognize the link between a patient's physical symptoms and their life stressors. This course will enable you to explore this link without getting into the realms of psychotherapy or counselling.

Most people will have experienced a nightmare at some stage in their lives. They will have awoken perhaps sweating, heart pounding, muscles tight and rigid, breathless. There has been a physical reaction to a particular state of mind, which in this instance is not even real! So anyone who has experienced a nightmare will recognise within themselves that the mind can influence their physiology. The course takes this recognition one step further by developing a physical awareness of how the mind influences the body. Through this awareness patient's are able to gain insight and understanding as to how their life stressors are impacting on their pain and sense of wellbeing.

Whilst the basis for some of the techniques have been spawned from the realms of cognitive behavioural therapy(CBT), neurolinguistic programming(NLP) and psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), the practical application will be very different.

It relies upon the manual therapy skills of the practitioner to tune the patient back into their bodies via their tissue palpation. It recognises that the mind and body are inextricably linked, and doesn't attempt to separate them out. It enables the therapist to meet many patients expectations, of their pain having roots in the physical structure, whilst at the same time bringing a freedom to explore the psychosocial aspects of that pain, but though bodily awareness. Patients are able to make the connection as to how their thoughts, what they believe and how they behave impacts on their pain and the way they hold themselves.

Finally, the course material has been designed in such a way that the patient can work through various thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours without actually divulging their content. The content remains personal to them. The role of the manual therapist is simply to bring awareness and attention back into the tissues and get the patient to notice and experience the physical change with the mind state change.

'What you are aware of you are in control of what you are not aware of is in control of you!'
